Past and Present is a copper statement necklace designed and handmade by Cherokee artist Greg Stice in our Oklahoma studio. Greg created it for competition, and it took 2nd Place in Jewelry at the 2025 Mvskoke Art Market, the Muscogee Nation's juried Native art market in Tulsa.
The necklace tells one story in two parts. The large copper discs carry imagery from the ancient shell gorgets of the mound-building culture, and the center medallion carries the Seal of the Cherokee Nation. Seven-pointed Cherokee stars connect the two, linking where we come from to who we are today.

The Story Behind Past and Present
Greg built this necklace as a timeline you can wear. Each symbol was chosen for a reason.
- The seven-pointed star: the emblem of the Cherokee Nation. It opens the necklace at the top, and it is cut through each of the smaller discs that link the piece together.
- The double-headed woodpecker: a design found on ancient shell gorgets made by the mound-building people of the Southeast, our ancestors.
- The water spider: in the Cherokee story of the first fire, the larger animals tried and failed to bring fire back across the water. The little water spider wove a bowl on her back, crossed the water, and carried home a single coal.
- The Seal of the Cherokee Nation: the center medallion. Its seven-pointed star represents the seven Cherokee clans, and its date, September 6, 1839, marks the constitution that reunited the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory.
Read from the top down, the necklace moves from our oldest imagery to the seal our Nation uses today. Cherokee Copper has created commissioned work for the Cherokee Nation, and the seal is used here with respect for what it represents.
