The Four Directions Collection is handmade Cherokee copper jewelry built around the seven-lined spiral, a design found on artifacts from the Mound Builder settlements of the Southeastern United States. Every piece is designed by Cherokee artists and made by hand in our family studio in Oklahoma.
What the Four Directions Symbol Means
This symbol is about balance, and it returns again and again to the number four:
-
The four cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West
-
The four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter
-
The four stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and elder
-
Flowing lines that mimic water: a very important part of life in all Southeastern Indigenous communities
Why Our Spiral Has Seven Lines
In keeping with this tradition, we expanded the shape to include seven lines. The numbers four and seven are central to Cherokee life. We look to the Seven Generations that came before us to ensure the success of the Seven Generations to come. We also have seven clans: Wolf, Deer, Long Hair, Paint, Blue, Wild Potato, and Bird.

Cherokee Copper is a family-owned, Native-owned studio in Oklahoma. Each piece is designed by Cherokee artists and made by hand.
