Then we hand punch each circle from the sheet and shape it into a convex dome, which is what gives the discs their depth and catches the light. Nine discs, graduated in size, are assembled into each necklace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Story Behind the Design\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore Sequoyah, Cherokee was a spoken language only. He spent years developing a syllabary, a set of characters that each represent a syllable, and completed it in 1821. The Cherokee Nation officially adopted it in 1825, and within a few years a large share of Cherokee people could read and write in their own language. In 1828 the \u003cem\u003eCherokee Phoenix\u003c\/em\u003e began printing in Cherokee and English.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe syllabary is still in use today, with 85 characters.
