Sequoyah completed it in 1821, and the Cherokee Nation officially adopted it in 1825. It is often called the Cherokee alphabet, but it is a syllabary: each of its 85 characters stands for a syllable instead of a single letter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore Sequoyah, Cherokee was a spoken language only. Within a few years of his work, a large share of Cherokee people could read and write in their own language, and in 1828 the \u003cem\u003eCherokee Phoenix\u003c\/em\u003e began printing in Cherokee and English.
